11 Month Twins: Developmental Milestones, Skills, and Updates

We are 1 month shy away from the boys first birthday! I know at each month I say it’s so crazy how fast time flies and how fast the boys are growing but I say it again because it’s so true!!! Can’t believe it that they’re already 11 months old!!

In this last month, I got to spend some more time with the boys because it was my spring break for work. We spent my spring break being pretty busy but also really nice to get out of the house and hang out with some friends. They even got to go on a little playdate with other kiddos while all the moms had our mama time together.

Weekend without the Twins

It was also the second time since the boys being born that I spent a weekend away from them. I left from Saturday morning and came back on Sunday night while my husby took care of our little guys. I’m so thankful that my husband was able to do this for me so that I could be there for one of best friend’s bachelorette weekend. I checked it probably few times while I was away, but I’m so happy and proud of my husband for holding down the fort for the boys while I was away.

I’m still breastfeeding though, so I had to carry my whole pumping kit, which included:

  • Spectra S2 electric breast pump
  • Spectra 9 Recharageable breast pump
  • pump parts
  • breastmilk storage bags
  • quick clean wipes
  • cooler bag
  • ice packs

It really was a whole jumbo sized bag to carry all these things together but all very needed to maintain milk supply! I had to pump in between car rides when we were out and also at our Airbnb. I also had to consider timing so that I could drink with the girls. Overall, although the whole pumping thing is a bit inconvenient and annoying, I think it’s all worth it to be able to provide the boys with the milk they need.

Sleep Changes

The boys have been having a bit of a setback from their streak of sleeping 12 hours for the past couple months. There has been some definite inconsistencies in their nap/sleep schedule. On some days, they would sleep a solid 2 hours for their morning nap and other days, they would sleep only 1 hour or even 30-40 minutes. Sometimes, they would miss their second nap and just play in their cribs babbling away with each other. It really is the cutest thing when they are holding onto the crib railing and having conversations with each other. Owen recently also likes to throw his pacifier and his bunny and his little bear lovey overboard to the floor. This has caused him to cry hysterically and be all distressed because he isn’t able to self-soothe and we have been having some early mornings around 6 AM or bit earlier because of this.

Their nap schedule has definitely been a bit off, and they have also been going to bed a bit later at around 7 PM. Once they go down at 7, they stay asleep until 6 AM. Still, 11 hours, so I can’t complain too much.

Motor Development and Play

Walking and wearing shoes! In the last month, the boys began walking! Wyatt began walking at 10 months and 1 week and Owen began walking at 10 months and 2 weeks. One of my friends got them little baby toms with little velcro straps. W adapted to them pretty quickly when we first put them on him, but O wanted them off immediately and cried when he first tried them on. He was confused why he wasn’t allowed to walk around barefooted outside, because he never has shoes on at home. However, by the second day, he got the idea and realized it’s okay and is now totally cool with his shoes. I also got them little light-up shark sandals from carters and I think it’s the cutest to see them walk around in them.

Going to the park! We are now able to enjoy the park more because they are free to explore and check out all the cool things outside. We are finally putting the wagon they got for Christmas to use! Sometimes, I prefer it over the stroller because it’s lightweight and easy set up. It’s roomier for them when they sit and there’s a seat belt for each of them, and they can look at each other as they enjoy their little ride. But at the same time, I have to pull it rather than pushing it, and there is no place for me to hang up my diaper backpack, so maybe I like our stroller better. But either way, it’s definitely a great thing to have for us!

At the park, they love to explore but I really have to keep my eye on them because they already had a taste of leaf, and they also attempted to put some dirt in their mouth. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna need that leash backpack asap. I find myself struggling when out in the community by myself with the boys and they both want to walk and not hold my hand. Usually they want to hang out together but sometimes they want to go in different directions, and I just can’t be in two places at once to maintain their safety.

Overall, I totally enjoy watching my boys waddling around everywhere like little ducklings.

Imitation. Both boys have their own set of skills they can imitate! Wyatt has learned to smack his lips together so he’s making kissy noises. I totally accept it as a kiss from my son, so I encourage it a million times a day. Owen just loves to clap his hands all day. If he hears music, he’ll clap his hands. If we all get excited for him, he will clap his hands. If we clap our hands randomly, he will start smiling and clap his hands. He is just a happy little guy! While Wyatt will make kissy noises, Owen will actually give me an open mouth kiss. It is literally the sweetest thing in the world and will melt your heart of you’re lucky enough to receive one! Wyatt on the other hand, can clearly tell us “No” by shaking his head. He will shake his head when he doesn’t want to eat anymore or when he’s done with his milk. He will also shake his head “No” at his brother when they both want the same toy.

Now we are also teaching them to do prayer hands and doing the Korean bow (인사) for greetings! Wyatt bends his knees and Owen will nod his head down. They learn differently, but similarly! I have yet to get it recorded, but I just love that the are just picking up on all these different skills!

The boys also love to imitate one another. If one takes toy and starts playing with it by tapping it, or taking things out of the toy box, or putting laundry in the basket or out of the basket, they will follow each other. One of the reasons I absolutely love having twins is for this very reason! They always have each other and will play together. They were always best friends from the womb!

Breastfeeding

We are slowly getting ready to be done with breastfeeding. Well, it’s probably gonna be saddest for me rather than the boys since they are always getting bottle-fed anyways with grandma while I’m working. I know they will do just fine adjusting to no longer having access to boobies. My supply has diminished, and while I tried really hard to keep up the supply, I’m not putting too much effort in keeping them full anymore. Yes, I did still pump and all when I had my weekend away with my girls, but I know it’s coming to an end! Even in the morning, my breasts aren’t as full anymore, and I know it for sure because the boys will easily gulp down a 5 or 6 ounce bottle in the morning. It’s gonna be so sad for me, but I know it will also be nice to have my body back and for not to be all worried about milk supply and the whole breastfeeding thing.

Other Updates

  • We upgraded ourselves to a minivan! We got the Honda Odyssey Elite and it’s kindof like the best car ever. We are happy with how spacious it is and how I can actually put some groceries in the car without using the passenger seat because the trunk was easily full with just the stroller in the back. Now we can take both the stroller and wagon, plus so much more!
  • The boys have yet again moved up another size this month. They are now in 12 month clothes. I also tried 18 month clothes, and it looks like the shirts fit but not the pants (unless they’re in cloth diapers lol)
  • They are continuing in size 3 diapers, but I think I might move them up a size soon because sometimes I’m scared the poop will explode. I have yet to experience one of those since when they were about 2-3 months, but it might as well happen if they don’t move up to size 4 diapers.
  • Wyatt was about 18 pounds and Owen was about 19 pounds at the beginning of the month, but I’m so curious to see how much they have grown at their 12 month checkup because they are mostly on formula rather than breastmilk now.
  • Koreans like to make baby’s first birthday a huge celebration. I’m pretty much planning for something similar to a wedding reception. I have been planning for their first birthday for about 2 months now, but it looks like everything is finally coming together and now I’m in anticipation mode for their birthday! More details to come regarding the first birthday soon!
