10 Month Twins: Developmental Milestones, Skills, and Updates

This past month has been crazy!

My blog. It has been now 1 month since I started blogging, and it has been a lot of fun for me as it serves as an outlet where I can write out and process how things have been going for us. I also joined several Facebook groups and have been learning a lot from the mom blogging community. I’m still pretty noob and don’t know how to really work this wordpress site, but I’m learning as I go, and I’m pretty proud of myself for being to get this thing rolling.

Home without Husby. Paul went on an emergency trip to Korea so that he could be with his family as they said their goodbyes to his grandmother. That also meant I was alone for a week. But in actuality, I was nowhere near alone. I am so thankful for my family and friends who have dropped by to help me out with the boys and to hang out with us outside as well. I felt fully supported and am so grateful for all the people God has placed in our lives.

The boys attended their first wedding! I was really contemplating whether I should even go to this wedding, because (1) it was an hour-long drive and (2) it was the weekend Paul returned but it was also the weekend Paul had to work on a Saturday, which usually never happens. I don’t know how, but I had the confidence and courage to try with the help of my dear friends Hyunjung and Juhe! The car ride up was a bit of a cryfest. Once we got there, I sat in the back, where the boys enjoyed their little snacks and food pouches. Until it ran out and they were getting a bit bored and antsy so we had to go to the baby room upstairs in the church. But we made it work and I got to see a lot of people I love and so it was worth it. Would I do it again alone? I don’t know, but I’m pretty proud of myself for taking them to a wedding all by myself.

Social and Motor Development

There has been some change since their last 9-month developmental update!

Dancing. Our boys love to dance! Now when they hear music, they will bop up and down and shake their little fluffy butts all around. There is nothing like my 2 little boys dancing. I sometimes start singing random made-up songs or when their daddy is around, we just have a dance party with the 4 of us. haha. We sure like to keep it fun in our house.

Standing/First steps! The boys are progressing each day in their new skills! They both navigate around the room by crawling and also by walking by holding onto the couch/wall/walker for support. Both boys can walk when we hold one hand. Wyatt took his first 2-3 steps about a week ago. I’m thinking they will start walking before their first birthday, but who knows!

Independence and Aggression. This has been a HUGE one this month. There has been major sibling rivalry where the boys will both want the same toy. There is definitely a lot of parallel play and communication with one another, but there has also been snatching, biting, and hitting. (Biting is probably due to teething but they are definitely making each other cry all the time)

Language Development. The boys have been babbling nonstop. But they also added screeches and screams here and there to add into the mix. Wyatt also says, “Mam” and “mam-ma”. So their vocabulary has expanded by another babble. haha!

Eating Table Foods

Meals are pretty much a warzone every single time, but I have really enjoyed seeing my boys try different foods, especially all my Korean dishes!

My boys have an interesting preference for Korean foods! They love all the different sorts of foods that I tried serving them including dwenjanggook (된장국), fish filets, rice balls, seaweed soup (미역국), shrimp fried rice. Let me tell you though, if you ever serve your baby Korean foods, get ready for the stinkiest poops ever. While baby-led weaning is all about serving your kids what’s on your plate, I always need to make a mild version of what I serve them. I always cook with extra spice and flavors, so I know they won’t be ready for that until a while later.

Their other current favorite foods include chicken quesadillas, yogurt, eggs, peanut butter/almond butter toast, cheese, frozen blueberries, strawberries, sweet potato, and rice crackers. While Owen will pretty much eat and try anything we give him, Wyatt will make a funny face when I give him something new or serve him veggies. He contemplates whether he wants it or not and will sometimes spit it out. He will also cry if I offer it again. He sure knows how to protest and communicate that he doesn’t like what he’s eating. Owen has no patience when it comes to food. He gets hangry and will also protest and whiplash his head backwards when he is told to wait or if I try to help feed him with the spoon he wants to play with.

Though I don’t spoon-feed the boys purees anymore, they still love it, so we switched over to using the baby brezza reusable food pouches. I find that purees are the only way that Wyatt will eat any vegetables anyway and it makes a great hack to feed them when we are on the go (especially if we don’t want to completely trash the restaurant or wherever we are for their feedings).

Honestly, not much to say on the topic of sleeping since they were sleep-trained at 5 months. I plan to share our story/experience on how we got our twin boys to sleep 12 hours, so be on the lookout for that post possibly this month!

The boys continue to take 2 naps everyday. One 2-hour morning nap and one 1-hour afternoon nap. I pushed their bedtime to around 7 PM due to their longer naptimes. They still uninterrupted sleep about 11-12 hours each night. Once in awhile they might stir and cry for a few seconds, but quickly fall asleep.

They have officially graduated from their bath tub It definitely served us well for the first 9 months and I might have even continued to use it if I had only one baby, but I began to have some trouble with the boys. I usually have to bathe them alone when Paul is not here to help, so I usually had one waiting/crying in line while the other is happily playing away in the water. But because the other one is already crying so bad, I always have to cut water play short. Then the one who was in the water begins to cry. I then have to lotion, diaper, and pj my fresh-out-of-the-bath baby while the other is now clinging on to me crying. Then once that’s done, I have to go through the cycle one more time. Now I got my clean baby crying while the other one who was previously crying is happily playing in the water. Then of course I cut water playtime short again because now my first baby is crying hysterically. Then I lotion, diaper, and pj again. Then now it’s time to just cuddle and hold both of them for a good 10 minutes or so to get them both to calm down. I just hated bathtime so much because I just have to turn into a mom boss and just get the job done. While I wish I can comfort/bathe both of them, the little bathtub wasn’t working for our family anymore.

Now that I got the boys a nice long bath mat and they can both play in the water together for their bathtime. I do everything together at the same time. And now everyone is much happier! They love to play and splash in the water and they enjoy for a good while. Meanwhile, you got one happier mama because our previous system is no longer working for us.

Other updates

  • The boys are moving up in their clothing size to 12 month clothes as the 6-9 month and 9 month clothes are too tight now! They both formed a big, ol’ belly and it’s too funny if I put them in 9 month clothes because that belly just sticks out so much.
  • We are on size 3 diapers, and we have been subscribed to the Honest company diapers where we get a month’s worth of diapers every 4 weeks. Well, a month’s worth for 1 baby. We are able to survive with just 1 box because I am continuing to cloth diaper my boys! I recently purchased the premium size prefolds on Amazon, which is supposed to last until they are potty trained and out of diapers.
  • The boys both have 6 teeth each. 4 on the top and 2 on the bottom. Owen has been experiencing some discomfort because he has been gnawing at his shirt and at his hand that there are pretty bad bite marks. I found that frozen blueberries is definitely a teething hack for us!
  • We are breastfeeding strong! But I’m thinking it won’t be too long before they’re done though. They prefer to be breastfed in the morning when they wake up and after their naps. But my supply has decreased significantly so I have been supplementing with formula with each feeding with the exception of the first feeding.

What a journey these last 10 months have been! I am continually thankful for each and every day I get to be their mom and watch them grow. Though our lives have been a bit hectic and chaotic recently, we choose to soar and have been overcoming negative attitudes and negative emotions knowing the truth that at the end of the day, we love one another and we have each other. What a great grace that is upon our lives!
